What is Baromas and why you should watch it

Baromas is a Hindi movie that was released in 2016. It is based on the award-winning Marathi novel of the same name by Sadanand Deshmukh. The movie addresses the plight of dryland farmers, educated-unemployed, and rural problems in Vidarbha, a region that is notorious for farmers' suicides. But Baromas is not a tragedy. It is a story of hope, resilience, and courage.

Baromas is a Hindi movie based on a Marathi novel

The novel Baromas, which means "month after month" in Marathi, was published in 2004 and won the Sahitya Akademi award in 2009. It tells the story of two brothers, Somu and Keshu, who belong to a farmer's family in Vidarbha. Somu is an engineer who cannot find a job, while Keshu is an aspiring poet who dreams of becoming famous. Both of them want to escape from the vicious cycle of debt, drought, and despair that plagues their village. They take different paths to achieve their goals - one resorts to banditry, while the other adopts the democratic way.

The novel was adapted into a Hindi movie by Dhiraj Meshram, who hails from Amravati district in Vidarbha. He directed and co-produced the movie with Sajith and Priyanka. The movie was shot in Khartalegao village in Amravati, where most of the crowd scenes comprise farmers of the village. The movie stays faithful to the novel's plot, characters, and themes.

Baromas depicts the plight of dryland farmers in Vidarbha

Vidarbha is a region in eastern Maharashtra that covers 11 districts. It is known for its cotton cultivation, but also for its high incidence of farmers' suicides. According to official data, more than 16,000 farmers have killed themselves in Vidarbha since 2001. The main reasons for this are low crop prices, high input costs, erratic rainfall, poor irrigation facilities, lack of institutional credit, and indebtedness to moneylenders.

Baromas portrays the harsh realities faced by dryland farmers in Vidarbha, who depend on monsoon rains for their crops. The movie shows how they struggle to make ends meet, how they are exploited by middlemen and corrupt officials, how they are driven to desperation by crop failures and loan sharks, and how they cope with their losses and grief. The movie also highlights the social issues that affect rural life, such as caste discrimination, gender inequality, domestic violence, alcoholism, and migration.
