Bangla Grammar

Bengali grammar (Bengali: Nib Bangla Bækôrôn) is the study of the morphology and syntax of Bengali, an Indo-European language spoken in the Indian subcontinent. Given that Bengali has two forms, চলত ভষ (cholito bhasha) and সধু ভষ (shadhu bhasha), it is important to note that the grammar discussed below applies fully only to the চলত (cholito) form. Shadhu bhasha is generally considered outdated and no longer used either in writing or in normal conversation. Although Bengali is typically written in the Bengali script, a Romanization scheme[which?] is also used here to suggest the pronunciation.

As we mentioned earlier, Dr Chatterjee regretted that he could not copy the entire Vocabulario which he did for the grammar, so this should be published in its entirety. And that is why, a man of my advanced age had to undertake this long journey from Bangladesh to the UK (to consult the 2 copies at the British Library) and then to proceed on to Portugal, particularly to Evora where I would get the printed and manuscript copies of the early works in this field. Good efforts are always rewarded. So, ours are.

Now, in short, what is there in this justly famous oeuvre? The grammar portion, i.e. first forty pages were translated by Dr Chatterjee with the help of Priya Ranjan Sen, a Calcutta University colleague who had some knowledge of Portuguese and French, while Dr Chaterjee had only of French and Latin. As for its significance, we find in it more than what one can except from such a beginning of the beginning.

The second scholar, Professor M.A. Qayyum, our respected senior colleague, did an extensive study on early Bangla grammar, published from the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Dhaka (1982). He had, however, something positive to say while comparing Manoel's compilation with that of the English grammarian Nathaniel Brassey Halhed's (1751-1830) work. Dr Qayyum writes,

The genesis of grammar as a description of linguistic structure has always been closely tied with the process of unifying and consolidating the variations within the framework of nation and state. Grammatical descriptions are heavily used by the educational institutes to maintain the structural standards of the languages. The evolution of Bangla grammar as the repository of structural standards is shaped by a series of processes under the influences of political wills in different political regimes. This article is an effort to understand the way Bangla grammar has reached its present form through its historicity.

Grammar In the ancient and medieval periods, the main grammar used in Bengal was sanskrit, though prakrit grammar was also used but infrequently. The most popular grammar texts were the abridged versions of Astaddhyayi Sutra by Panini (c 5th century BC), such as Katantra, Bopdev's Mugdhabodhvyakaran, Kramadishvar's (13th century) Sangksiptasar and Maharaj Jumarnandi's (14th century) Brtti Rasavati. Two similar 19th century texts include Vyakarankaumudi (1853) by iswar chandra vidyasagar and Katantrachhandahprakriya (1896) by chandrakanta tarkalankar.

Rule-based parsing is the task that recognizes the structure of a sentence and assigns probable rules to parse the sentence. The structures can be assigned by context-free grammars that are employed to generate the accurate parse trees. We have developed formal grammars for Bangla language for various sentence structures. Since inherently these grammars are ambiguous, the CYK parsing algorithm is applied to verify the grammars. By checking the parse table, grammatical errors are detected if it has no entry for the terminal symbol. For recognizing the pattern of Bangla sentences, domain-specific context-free grammar (CFG) is developed based on the rules of Bangla grammar and applied to the domain. We have selected the air traffic information system (ATIS) as our selected domain. The efficiency of the proposed parsing scheme is shown using different kinds of Bangla sentences that show high accuracy within the domain.
