About the Novel

The Best of Me is set in Oriental, North Carolina, a small town on the Pamlico Sound. The novel alternates between the past and the present, revealing the history and the destiny of Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier.

In 1984, Dawson and Amanda were high school seniors who fell deeply in love despite their different backgrounds. Dawson came from a notorious family of criminals who abused and rejected him for being different. Amanda came from a wealthy and influential family who disapproved of her relationship with Dawson. With the help of Tuck Hostetler, an elderly mechanic who became their friend and protector, they managed to overcome the obstacles and enjoy their romance. However, at the end of the summer, a tragic accident forced them to part ways and follow different paths.

In 2023, Dawson and Amanda are both unhappy with their lives. Dawson works on an oil rig off the coast of Louisiana, living a lonely and dangerous existence. He has never married or had children. Amanda is married to Frank Reynolds, a successful but alcoholic lawyer who cheats on her. She has three children: Jared, Lynn, and Bea. Bea suffers from a rare form of leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. One day, Dawson and Amanda receive a call from Oriental informing them that Tuck has died and left them some instructions to follow. They decide to go back to their hometown for the first time in 25 years to honor Tuck's wishes.

When they meet again at Tuck's house, they feel an instant connection and attraction. They discover that Tuck has left them letters, photos, and clues that reveal his role in their lives and his hopes for their future. They also learn that Tuck's wife Clara was Dawson's biological grandmother, making him a distant relative of Amanda's. As they spend time together, they rekindle their old feelings and wonder if they can have a second chance at love. However, they also face many complications and dangers. Amanda is torn between her loyalty to her family and her passion for Dawson. Dawson is hunted by his cousin Abee Cole, who wants revenge for Dawson's involvement in the death of his father Tommy Cole. And both of them are haunted by a mysterious figure who seems to be watching over them.

The novel ends with a twist that shocks both the readers and the characters. It reveals that the figure who saved Dawson from the oil rig explosion and guided him throughout his journey was actually his younger self. It also shows that Dawson sacrificed his life to save Amanda's son Jared from Abee's bullet. His death allows Jared to receive his bone marrow donation and survive his leukemia. Amanda is devastated by Dawson's death but grateful for his gift. She decides to stay with her husband Frank and work on their marriage. She also keeps in touch with Tuck's lawyer Harvey Collier (who is also her uncle) and visits Dawson's grave regularly. She believes that Dawson's spirit is still with her and that he is the best of her.
