The Spy And The Traitor

Gordievsky was recruited by MI6 in 1974 when he was a KGB major stationed in Denmark. Unlike his nemesis, the dissolute, burnt-out CIA agent Aldrich Ames \\u2013 the \\\"traitor\\\" in the book's title \\u2013 money was not a motivation. Gordievsky's rapid rise within the KGB paralleled his growing disillusionment with the Soviet system. It began with the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, which he witnessed, and deepened with the crushing of the Prague Spring in 1968, which appalled him. He transferred his loyalties, and spied, because he believed it was the right thing to do; it was a \\\"righteous betrayal\\\".

The Spy and the Traitor

But wait, what caused Gordievsky to be exfiltrated from Moscow, especially after he was made the Rezident of the KGBs London office? In very short form the CIA is jealous of MI6 and wants to know who their source is. They soon find out and his name ends up on the desk of Aldrich Ames who was selling secrets to KGB officers in Washington. His betrayal leads to the death of scores of CIA operatives and sources in Russia and ultimately to the KGB investigation of Gordievsky. In Macintyres view Ames is a traitor who sold out his country for big bucks and Gordievsky is an honorable spy seeking to better his country. 041b061a72
